A city within walls
Itchan Kala is the inner fortified town of Khiva. UNESCO describes it as a historic settlement south of the Amu Darya in the Khorezm region and notes that it served as the last resting place for caravans before crossing the desert toward Persia.
More than two millennia of history
UNESCO states that Itchan Kala has a history spanning over two thousand years. Its compact form makes it especially rewarding for travelers who enjoy exploring on foot.
A remarkable concentration of monuments
The UNESCO property contains 51 ancient monumental structures and around 250 dwellings. Mosques, madrasas, mausoleums, caravanserais and markets are woven into the historic fabric.
The Djuma Mosque
The Djuma Mosque is one of the important monuments within Itchan Kala. Its interior is known for a forest of wooden columns, creating a very different atmosphere from the monumental tilework seen elsewhere in Uzbekistan.
The city as a caravan stop
Khiva's location near the desert routes made it part of the long-distance trading world of Central Asia. The walls, gates and compact streets help visitors imagine how travelers once moved through the city.
Best way to explore
Walk without rushing. Start early, visit major monuments before the strongest daytime heat, then return for evening light. A local guide can add context about architecture, trade and Khorezm history.
