MrBeast in Samarkand: Why the Silk Road Is Having Its Moment

The world's biggest YouTuber came to Tashkent and Samarkand in October 2026. Here is what happened, and how to see the places behind the headlines yourself.

October 2026 brought an unusual guest to Uzbekistan. MrBeast, the American creator whose YouTube channel counts more than 500 million subscribers, made his first trip to Central Asia, starting in Tashkent and moving on to Samarkand the next day.

What happened in Tashkent

On 9 October MrBeast met fans in Tashkent at an event organised by Uzbekistan's Art and Culture Development Foundation. Around 200 people over 18 took part, chosen at random from those who had registered, with games and quizzes for prizes. The foundation said the aim was to support Uzbekistan's young YouTube community and help local creators connect with the global media world.

Samarkand the next day

On 10 October local media reported hundreds of fans gathering in Samarkand to see him and take photos. His team had said they would visit Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva from 10 October, but kept the schedule and the content of the filming private, so nobody outside the team knows yet what the next video will show.

UZORA Travel is not involved in the visit. But as a Samarkand company, we can tell you why a creator who has filmed all over the world would want these three cities in front of his camera.

Why Samarkand looks so good on camera

Registan Square is the obvious answer: three madrasas of the 15th to 17th centuries facing each other across one square, covered in blue and gold tilework. In the morning the light is soft and the square is quiet; in the evening the facades are lit up.

Shah-i-Zinda, a street of mausoleums climbing a hill, has some of the finest tilework in the Islamic world, and every turn opens a new view. Gur-e-Amir, the tomb of Amir Timur, has its ribbed turquoise dome and a golden interior. Bibi-Khanym Mosque was one of the largest mosques of its time, and the Siyob Bazaar next door is where Samarkand shops for bread, dried fruit and spices.

UNESCO lists Samarkand as a World Heritage site under the name Samarkand – Crossroad of Cultures. You can see all of these places in one relaxed day on our Samarkand City Tour with a private guide.

Bukhara and Khiva: the next stops

Bukhara is the most walkable of the Silk Road cities. Its old centre around the Lyabi-Hauz pond, the Kalon Minaret and the trading domes still feels like a merchant town, and most sights are a few minutes apart on foot. From Samarkand it is an easy day out by high-speed train: see our Bukhara Day Trip by Train.

Khiva's Itchan Kala is a whole walled town inside clay ramparts, with minarets, palaces and madrasas packed into a few streets. It is best explored slowly, on foot, ideally around sunset from the city walls. Our Khiva City Tour covers it with a local guide.

How to see all three on one trip

If the headlines have you thinking about Uzbekistan, the classic route links Tashkent, Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand in about a week. Our Classic Uzbekistan: 8 Days does exactly that, privately on your own dates or as a small group tour on fixed dates, with a local guide in every city.

Visiting when the crowds come

Viral attention brings more visitors, so plan a little. Visit Registan and Shah-i-Zinda early in the morning, when the light is best and the squares are quiet, and save the evening for Registan's illuminations. Book hotels and the high-speed trains between Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara well ahead in spring and autumn, which are the busiest seasons.
