Nuratau Mountains: Hiking, Horse Riding & Village Life

A slower, more adventurous side of Uzbekistan between the Silk Road cities.

A different side of Uzbekistan

Beyond the blue-tiled monuments of Samarkand and the historic streets of Bukhara lies a quieter landscape of mountain valleys, villages, walnut trees and open trails. The Nuratau Mountains offer travelers an opportunity to slow down and experience Uzbekistan through nature, hiking, horse riding and village hospitality. Uzbekistan Travel highlights scenic hiking trails through the Nuratau Mountains and identifies horse tours around the Nurata range and Aydarkul as part of Uzbekistan's growing active and eco-tourism offer.

Hiking in the Nuratau Mountains

Nuratau hiking is less about conquering a famous summit and more about exploring a landscape shaped by villages, streams, orchards, mountain slopes and traditional ways of life. Routes can pass through rural settlements and natural viewpoints, with opportunities to discover local landscapes and historic sites along the way. Uzbekistan Travel specifically describes scenic hiking trails crossing traditional mountain villages in the Nuratau range.

Horse riding through mountain landscapes

For travelers who want to explore at a slower rhythm, horse riding is one of the most memorable ways to experience the region. Uzbekistan Travel notes that multi-day horse tours take place in the Nurata range and around Aydarkul Lake. Horse riding can be combined with village stays, mountain scenery and outdoor meals, depending on the route and local operator.

Sentob: a gateway to rural Nuratau

The village of Sentob, in the Navoi region between the Nurata Mountains and the Kyzylkum Desert, is promoted as a tourist village. Uzbekistan Travel describes the settlement as retaining an authentic Central Asian village character, while local guesthouses provide modern amenities. Visitors can ride horses, hike in the mountains, explore the surroundings and combine the visit with Aydarkul and other nearby attractions.

Nature and wildlife

The Nurata Nature Reserve protects important mountain ecosystems and is known for the Severtsov argali, a wild sheep subspecies listed in conservation registers. The reserve also contains diverse plant and animal life, while the wider Nurata landscape includes mountain villages, rock art, lakes and historic water-management sites. Access to protected areas should follow local rules and guide instructions.

Aydarkul connection

The Nuratau Mountains and Aydarkul Lake can be combined into a distinctive nature-focused itinerary. The contrast is striking: mountain valleys and villages on one side, and a large lake surrounded by the Kyzylkum landscape on the other. A yurt stay can add another layer to the experience, with traditional-style accommodation, outdoor activities and evening time under the open sky.

Village homestays

One of the strengths of the Nuratau experience is the opportunity to stay in local guesthouses. Rather than spending the entire trip in hotels, travelers can sleep in a village, eat home-style food and meet local hosts. This makes the journey feel more personal and gives visitors a closer look at everyday rural life.

Who should visit?

Nuratau is especially suitable for travelers who enjoy hiking, horse riding, photography, nature, village life and slower travel. It also works well as a two- or three-day break between the major Silk Road cities, adding landscapes and local encounters to an itinerary dominated by architecture.

When to go

Spring and autumn are generally attractive periods for outdoor activities, while summer can be hot in lower and desert areas. Mountain conditions can change quickly, so travelers should check current weather, trail conditions, horse-tour availability and local guidance before departure.

A sample UZORA itinerary

Day 1: Travel toward the Nuratau region and settle into a village guesthouse. Take a short local walk and enjoy a traditional dinner.

Day 2: Morning mountain hike with a local guide, followed by lunch in the village. In the afternoon, enjoy a horse-riding excursion through the surrounding landscape.

Day 3: Continue toward Aydarkul Lake or a nearby yurt camp, depending on the route, before continuing to Samarkand or Bukhara.

Important travel note

Mountain activities should be planned according to current weather, trail conditions and the experience level of the group. Horse riding should be arranged with an experienced local operator or guide, and protected areas should be visited according to local regulations.
