Description
Itchan Kala, the walled inner town of Khiva, feels like an open-air museum: minarets, madrasas, palaces and homes packed inside clay walls, and all of it a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990. It is small enough to explore on foot in a day, and a local guide brings its stories to life.
Walk from the West Gate past the turquoise stump of Kalta Minor to the khans' fortress of Kunya-Ark, step into the Juma Mosque with its forest of carved wooden columns, see the tiled courtyards of the Tash Hauli palace and the blue dome of Pahlavan Mahmud, and climb the Islam Khoja minaret for the view over the rooftops.
Not included: the Itchan Kala entrance ticket, the minaret climb and lunch. Mornings and late afternoons are the most pleasant times in summer. For groups of more than 10 people, please contact us.
