Description
A full day from Samarkand into the mountains of southern Uzbekistan. The road climbs through valleys and over the pass, with stops for the views and at a small bazaar on the pass, to Langar Ota, a mountain village and place of pilgrimage tied to the Sufi tradition.
From Langar Ota you continue to Shakhrisabz, the home town of Amir Timur, to see its Timurid monuments on your own or with a guide. On the way back, you can stop for tandir lamb, slow-cooked in a clay oven.
Not included: meals and drinks, entrance tickets, the optional guide, the tandir lamb stop, tips and personal expenses.
Itinerary
After breakfast, your driver picks you up at your hotel. The road soon leaves the plain for winding mountain roads and deep valleys.
A first short stop to stretch your legs and photograph the mountain scenery.
A local market at the top of the pass, with local products and seasonal goods. Free time to look around and shop.
A photo stop high above the valleys, with wide views over the surrounding ranges.
A historic mountain settlement and a place of local pilgrimage. Walk around the complex in its dramatic setting and learn about its religious traditions, the historical figures linked to it and its ties with Sufi culture.
Lunch at a local restaurant of your choice, then explore the home town of Amir Timur: the gate of the Ak-Saray palace, the Kok-Gumbaz Mosque and the Dorut-Tilovat and Dorus-Saodat complexes. On your own, or with the optional English-speaking guide.
Late afternoon drive back to Samarkand. If timing allows, stop on the way for tandir lamb at your own expense. Drop-off at your hotel in the evening.
