Description

Two days in the villages of the Nuratau Mountains, far from the tour buses. Asraf and Uhum are quiet mountain communities of stone houses, orchards and streams, where families still farm, bake bread and keep their crafts much as before. You stay the night with a local family and walk from one village to the other on a mountain trail.

On the first day you explore Asraf and visit the rock carvings in the surrounding hills, images of animals, hunters and symbols left by people thousands of years ago. On the second day you hike about 8–10 km (2–3 hours) through valleys and past streams and rock formations to Uhum, where lunch is waiting before the drive back to Samarkand.

The hike is moderate, with some steep and rocky sections: good walking shoes, a hat and a small backpack are recommended. Not included: personal expenses and medical insurance. For groups of more than 10 people, please contact us.

Itinerary

Day 1
Samarkand – Asraf village – rock carvings

After breakfast, a drive of about 3.5–4 hours through the countryside to Asraf. Check in to a local guesthouse and take a guided walk around the village, its stone houses, narrow lanes and orchards. After a home-cooked lunch, head into the hills to see the petroglyphs: rock carvings of ibex, deer, horses and people hunting and dancing, many thought to date from the Bronze Age. Back in the village, dinner with your hosts and, when it can be arranged, local folk music. Night in the guesthouse under a sky full of stars.

Day 2
Hike from Asraf to Uhum – Samarkand

Breakfast of fresh bread, cheese and tea, then set off on foot with a local mountain guide. The trail from Asraf to Uhum (about 8–10 km, 2–3 hours) climbs through green valleys, along clear streams and past striking rock formations, with wide views over the ridges. Lunch in Uhum village, then the drive back to Samarkand, arriving in the evening.

What's Included
