Description
The Seven Lakes (Haft Kul) lie in the Fann Mountains of western Tajikistan, part of the Pamir-Alai range: a chain of turquoise, emerald and deep-blue lakes set among high valleys, rugged peaks and alpine meadows. This day trip from Samarkand crosses the border into Tajikistan and follows the valley from lake to lake, with time to walk along the shores and take in the views.
On the way back you visit Sarazm, a 5,000-year-old Bronze Age settlement listed by UNESCO, and the ancient ruins of Panjikent, often called the “Pompeii of Central Asia”, before returning to Samarkand in the evening.
Some lakes involve a short walk or climb at altitude, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The route crosses the Uzbekistan–Tajikistan border, so bring your passport. Not included: personal expenses. The trip can be tailored to your wishes.
Itinerary
An early-morning scenic drive from Samarkand via the Jartepa border crossing into Tajikistan and on into the Fann Mountains (about 1–2 hours).
Vivid turquoise water that mirrors the surrounding peaks. Usually the first lake of the day, and a favourite with photographers.
Tucked beneath towering cliffs and in shade for much of the day, giving the water a mysterious violet tint. A calm, cool spot to pause.
A remote lake surrounded by untouched landscape, for those who want a glimpse of the raw wilderness of the Fann region.
Nearly 2 km long, the longest of the seven lakes. Its calm, deep-blue water changes with every step along the shore.
A small, intimate lake framed by greenery and, in spring, wildflowers.
The largest and most famous of the lakes: emerald water framed by dramatic ridges. A popular picnic spot where travellers often spend the most time.
The highest lake, fed by countless natural springs that keep the water pure. A peaceful finale to the Seven Lakes.
A picnic or lunch at a local café before starting the journey back.
The ruins of a Bronze Age settlement more than 5,000 years old, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Central Asia's oldest urban centres.
The “Pompeii of Central Asia”: ruins of ancient citadels, temples and a once-thriving city on the Zeravshan River.
Arrival back in Samarkand in the evening.
