Children and grown-ups alike enjoy watching potters at work in Gijduvan and paper being made by hand from mulberry bark in Konigil. Between the cities you travel by train where the timetable suits, or by private car.
Not included: international flights, meals other than breakfast, travel insurance, tips and personal expenses.
Itinerary
Your driver meets you at Tashkent airport and takes you to the hotel. Depending on your arrival time, set out with your guide to see the Hazrati Imam complex in the old city, Chorsu Bazaar, a few of the decorated Metro stations, Independence Square and Amir Timur Square. If time allows, a family-friendly park can be added.
Travel to Bukhara by train when a suitable one runs on your date, otherwise by private car. Meet your local guide and start with the old town: Lyab-i Hauz, the Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasa, the covered trading domes and the craft shops along the lanes. Free evening in the old city.
A full day with your guide: the Po-i-Kalyan complex with the Kalyan Minaret and Mosque and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa, the Ark fortress, the Bolo Hauz Mosque, the Samanid Mausoleum and Chashma-Ayub, with time for bazaars, workshops and souvenir shopping along the way.
Drive east by private car. In Gijduvan, visit a family pottery workshop famous for its ceramics, then stop at Rabati Malik, the remains of a caravanserai on the old Silk Road. Arrive in Samarkand in the afternoon; if everyone still has energy, a first look at Registan Square.
A full day with your guide: Registan Square, the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, the Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Siyob Bazaar, the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis and the Ulugbek Observatory. In Konigil village, watch Samarkand paper being made by hand the old way. The guide sets the order around opening hours and traffic.
Return to Tashkent by train or private car, depending on your flight time. If there is time before the flight, some more sightseeing or shopping can be arranged, then the transfer to Tashkent airport.
