Uzbekistan
Tashkent is where most journeys start: the capital, with the main international airport and the trains to Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. It is a modern city of wide avenues and parks, largely rebuilt after the 1966 earthquake, with an old quarter around the Hazrati Imam complex and the domed Chorsu Bazaar.
A day is enough for the main sights, including a ride on the metro with its decorated stations. From Tashkent, day trips go to the Chimgan mountains and Charvak lake, and to Samarkand by high-speed train.
What to see in Tashkent
Hazrati Imam
The religious heart of the city; its library keeps the Uthman Quran, one of the oldest Qurans in the world.
Chorsu Bazaar
The great domed market: bread, spices, dried fruit and everyday Tashkent life.
Tashkent Metro
Every station decorated in its own style, from chandeliers to cosmonauts; photographs are allowed.
Amir Timur and Independence Squares
The modern centre, with the State Museum of the History of the Timurids close by.
Museum of Applied Arts
A 19th-century diplomat's house with carved plaster ceilings and the best of Uzbek crafts.
Chimgan and Charvak
Mountains and a turquoise reservoir about 80 km away, for walks in summer and skiing in winter.
