When Is the Best Time to Visit Uzbekistan?

A practical seasonal guide for Silk Road travelers.

The short answer

For a classic Uzbekistan journey focused on Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons to consider. Uzbekistan Travel describes spring and autumn as a “velvet season” for sightseeing and Silk Road travel. Its visitor guidance also notes that the country has a hot, dry climate, while conditions vary by region.

Spring: March to May

Spring brings a fresh landscape, pleasant sightseeing conditions and a lively cultural calendar. Around 21 March, Navruz marks the arrival of spring with public celebrations, traditional foods such as sumalak, family gatherings and cultural events. For travelers who want architecture plus festivals and local atmosphere, spring can be especially rewarding.

Summer: June to August

Summer can be very hot and dry, particularly in the lowland cities. Uzbekistan Travel notes that daytime temperatures can reach around 38°C in summer, while mountain and lakeside areas can be more comfortable. If traveling in summer, plan major sightseeing for mornings and late afternoons and consider adding mountain or lake destinations.

Autumn: September to early November

Autumn is another strong period for a classic cultural itinerary. The heat eases, the weather is generally suitable for walking through historic centers, and the season works well for combining cities with countryside experiences.

Winter: December to February

Winter offers a different side of Uzbekistan. Historic cities and museums can be quieter, and mountain resorts provide opportunities for snow activities. Travelers should expect colder conditions and shorter daylight hours, especially outside the main cities.

A smart itinerary by season

Spring and autumn: prioritize Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and outdoor excursions.

Summer: combine the historic cities with Chimgan, Charvak, Amirsoy or lake and desert experiences.

Winter: focus on museums, architecture, gastronomy and mountain resorts.
