Is Uzbekistan Safe for Tourists? Practical Advice for First-Time Visitors

A practical overview of common-sense safety, transport, local customs and responsible travel in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan is increasingly popular with international travelers, and many visitors find it welcoming and straightforward to explore. As with any international trip, sensible preparation and awareness are important.

Keep your passport, money and important documents secure, especially in busy markets, stations and tourist areas. Carry a digital backup of important documents and keep emergency contacts accessible.

When using taxis, agree on the service and price in advance or use a reputable app or organized transfer. For longer journeys, official transport or a trusted tour operator can reduce uncertainty.

Respect local customs. Uzbekistan has a strong tradition of hospitality, and visitors generally receive a warm welcome. Modest clothing is appropriate when visiting religious sites, and travelers should follow local instructions about photography and behavior.

Stay hydrated, especially during hot weather. Summer temperatures can be high in desert and historic-city areas. Carry water, use sun protection and plan strenuous sightseeing for cooler parts of the day.

In mountain and desert areas, safety planning becomes more important. Hiking should be done with appropriate equipment and, for unfamiliar routes, with a local guide. Inform someone of your route and carry enough water.

Food and water precautions should follow your normal international travel habits. Choose busy restaurants with good turnover, wash hands regularly and use bottled or reliably treated water if you are unsure about the local supply.

Travel insurance is also sensible, particularly if your itinerary includes hiking, horseback riding or remote areas.

The best safety strategy is preparation rather than worry. Learn a few basic local phrases, keep contact information for your accommodation and guide, and leave copies of important documents accessible.

Uzora Travel can provide local guides, transfers and trip support so travelers have a local point of contact throughout their Uzbekistan journey.
